Most issues are covered below. Start with the FAQ and the changelog.

Quick troubleshooting

  1. Confirm Aurio is running (menu-bar icon) and first-run setup finished.
  2. Fully quit and reopen the app you select the microphone in.
  3. Check System Settings → Privacy & Security → Microphone is on for Aurio.
  4. Use Repair in Aurio’s settings to reinstall the audio component.
  5. Restart your Mac if a recent macOS update unloaded the component.

For the “Aurio Microphone” not appearing, see the FAQ. If Install or Repair seems to do nothing at all, see below.

Install or Repair does nothing

Aurio installs its audio component through a small background service. Rarely, macOS approves that service but then refuses to start it. Aurio cannot fix this from inside the app, and it is not a setting you can change.

How to recognise it

  • Install or Repair in Aurio’s settings appears to do nothing at all.
  • You are never asked for your password.
  • “Aurio Microphone” never appears in System Settings → Sound → Input.
  • Login Items & Extensions shows Aurio switched on and looking perfectly normal.

Confirm it before changing anything

The symptoms above are shared with several ordinary problems, so check for the real signature first. Press Install / Repair driver in Aurio’s settings once, then run this in Terminal — it only reads state and changes nothing:

sudo launchctl print system/com.aurio.helper

You are looking for last exit code = 78 together with needs LWCR update. Press Repair first because, until something asks for the service, a stuck machine looks completely idle and reports neither.

If you do not see both of those, stop here — you have a different problem, and the last resort below will not help. Email support@aurio.dev and we will work it out with you. We would rather hear from you first either way.

Try this first: restart your Mac

In our own testing this cleared it. macOS records that the launch permission needs rebuilding, and it appears to do that rebuilding while starting up rather than while running — so a restart, with Aurio installed normally, is the cheapest thing that has actually worked.

Restart, then open Aurio and use Install / Repair driver again. If the driver installs, you are done — stop here and ignore the rest of this section.

We cannot promise it, because we have only been able to verify it on one machine we broke deliberately. If a restart does not help, carry on below.

What does not fix it

Every one of these was tried against a genuinely stuck machine, and every one failed. They are listed so you do not have to work through them yourself.

AttemptedResult
Relaunching Aurio No change — re-registering does nothing while the record already exists.
Switching Aurio off and on in Login Items & Extensions Updates the record in place, but does not rebuild the launch constraint.
Uninstalling from inside Aurio Silently did nothing. (That silence is fixed in current versions — it now reports the failure.)
Deleting Aurio from Applications The record survives deletion and keeps trying to start a program that is no longer there.
Reinstalling from the disk image Verified in testing: the fault survives. A fresh record is created, but it still carries the stale launch permission, so Repair keeps failing.
Installing a newer version of Aurio over the top Also verified: no change. A newer, correctly signed release does not rebuild the launch permission either.
Removing the job by hand
sudo launchctl bootout system/com.aurio.helper
macOS re-imports the job straight back from the record.
Removing and re-adding the background item in software (our own testing) Removes the job but only marks the record disabled — re-adding it restores the very same stale constraint, and the fault returns the next time Aurio needs it.

Last resort

If the restart above did not help, one heavier option is known to clear it. Please read what it costs before running it.

  • It resets background items for every app on your Mac, not just Aurio.
  • There is no undo, and no way to limit it to one app.
  • Backup tools, VPN clients, sync agents and security software all stop running in the background until you approve them again — and unlike a menu-bar icon, those fail quietly. Check anything you rely on.
  • Many apps only re-appear in Login Items after you launch them again, so expect to reopen them one by one.
  • Menu-bar icons will change position.

If you are comfortable with all of that, run this and then restart your Mac:

sudo sfltool resetbtm

After the restart, open Aurio and use Install / Repair driver again. You will also need to re-approve your other apps under System Settings → General → Login Items & Extensions.

Email support@aurio.dev. We typically reply within 1–2 business days.

Send a diagnostic report

To help us debug faster, open Aurio → Settings → Diagnostics and click Run diagnostics. A Copy report button appears once it finishes — click that and paste the result straight into your email. It contains device and app details — no captured audio.
